The Green Bay Packers have added another piece to their strong defense. General manager Brian Gutekunst signed former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Tim Williams to the active roster, according to Pro Football Focus.
This is a great depth signing for the Packers. Williams was a third-round pick out of Alabama in 2017, and was widely regarded as a very high-upside player. He was expected to compete for a starting job this offseason, but could never make a strong push for the job. Williams quickly became the odd man out in the Ravens pass-rushing rotation, falling behind the likes of Tyus Bowser and Pernell McPhee.
While the Alabama product may have fallen out of favor in Baltimore, Green Bay is an ideal landing spot. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine likes to rotate his pass-rushers, which means a chance for meaningful snaps. Rotational linebacker Kyler Fackrell is dealing with a shoulder injury, which opens the door for Williams to make plays. Primary backup and first-round pick Rashan Gary hasn't been very impressive.

Williams' first game with Green Bay won't be an easy one. The Packers face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, which means facing an elite offensive line. While it's true that All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith won't play, Dallas is still strong up front. Williams will likely have to face backup tackle Cameron Fleming or right Tackle La'el Collins. Fleming isn't an intimidating matchup, but Collins has been one of the best right tackles in football this year.
