After firing former head coach Mike McCarthy last week after an unlikely loss, the Green Bay Packers appointed Joe Philbin as their interim head coach. On Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, the Packers looked like a completely rejuvenated team and they cruised to a 34 to 20 victory over the Falcons. Green Bay had scored all of their points in the first three quarters and let off the gas in the fourth quarter.
Philbin may be the answer the Packers needed to salvage their season as they looked stagnant on a weekly basis with McCarthy making the play calls. There had been speculation that McCarthy had lost the team or the rumors that quarterback Aaron Rodgers had enough of McCarthy and that was the biggest issue. Whatever the case may be, things were simply not working out for the Packers. As unfortunate as it is to see a head coach lose their job after so much success over the years, the saying is true: All good things come to an end.
Whatever the future holds for the Packers, it's evident a change at the head coaching position was a necessary plan of action for Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers got a break as the team didn't look to force so many passes downfield, rather they featured running back Aaron Jones more frequently. Rodgers stressed the importance of getting Jones the ball more frequently when McCarthy was the head coach, but Jones didn't ever seem to get a consistent workload.
The Packers' chances of making the playoffs may be slim but Rodgers has not lost hope and believes the team still stands a good chance.
