The Jacksonville Jaguars haven't exactly had the ideal offseason. General manager Trent Baalke gave out huge contracts to wide receivers Christian Kirk and Zay Jones, two of the worst contracts of all of free agency. However, they did have some positive additions to the team.
Offensive guard Brandon Scherff provides an elite offensive line presence on a team that sorely needs it. Defensive tackle Foley Fatukasi gives them an underrated presence on the defensive line. Despite those good additions, Jacksonville obviously has a long way to go. There are several good moves that the Jaguars can make, but there are two that would drastically improve the quality of their roster.
Key Moves the Jaguars Need to Make to Complete Their 2022 Roster
Explore trade options for Rayshawn Jenkins
This is in no way a criticism of Jenkins. He was one of Jacksonville's better defensive players in 2021, but his contract with the Jags is hard to square in the front office. Jenkins is earning nearly $9 million dollars per year, which is more than fellow safeties Marcus Maye and Vonn Bell.
Jenkins is clearly overpaid, and spending big money on the safety position when there are so many other needs on the roster is hard to justify. Making Jenkins even more expendable is the presence of Andre Cisco. Cisco, a second-year safety out of Syracuse, showed flashes of good play in limited snaps last year. He'll never be able to see consistent snaps with Jenkins in front of him on the depth chart. Moving the veteran safety would allow Cisco to become a full-time starter, which could lead to rapid development.
Article Continues BelowIt's unlikely that Jacksonville would get a huge return for Jenkins, but a trade is still worth exploring. Despite his status as one of the Jags' best defenders in 2021, he's about an average safety in the NFL. He's still good enough to make a big impact on a contender that's missing a piece in the secondary. Two AFC West teams, the Denver Broncos and the Las Vegas Raiders, could be interested in adding Jenkins. The Broncos are set to start either PJ Locke or Caden Sterns at safety, two below-average players. The Raiders are supposed to start Jonathan Abram at one safety spot, a mediocre player who is consistently injured. Either team could be willing to give up a mid-round pick for Jenkins.
Pursue defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi
The Jaguars desperately need help on the defensive line. They weren't horrible against the run last season, but they struggled to rush the passer consistently. That happens to be Ogunjobi's specialty, so this pairing would work well. The former Cincinnati Bengals lineman is coming off of a career year where he notched nearly 50 tackles and seven sacks. Adding Ogunjobi instantly provides a big boost to the pass rush, as he's one of the better interior rushers in the NFL. At this stage in free agency, there aren't many reliable pass rushers available. Ogunjobi is one of the few players Jacksonville could sign to improve that hugely important area of their defense.
While this may seem like a strange signing at first, Ogunjobi is actually a fairly good fit. He's only 27 years old, and he's versatile enough to play in most defensive schemes. The presence of edge rusher Josh Allen would also allow Ogunjobi to get plenty of one-on-one matchups, an area that he excels in.
