After a disappointing 2021 campaign in Year 1 of the Trevor Lawrence era, the Jaguars are looking for a fresh start in 2022. With Doug Pederson at the helm, the Jaguars will look to make some significant improvements in 2022. This is a team that needs to improve in virtually every aspect, so Pederson will have his work cut out for him in the offseason as he looks to further fortify the roster around Lawrence.

The Jaguars will have a lot of cap space to bring players in, but even still, sometimes the best way to improve is addiction by subtraction. The Jaguars have a handful of players on contract for the 2022 season that simply aren't justifying their price tag, or are now considered surplus to requirements. The Jaguars need to bring in as much talent as possible while also leaving room for their young players to develop, which could result in some veteran players getting let go as salary cap casualties.

With that in mind, here's one Jaguars player who could be a surprise roster cut during the 2022 NFL offseason.

1 Jaguars surprise roster cut in the 2022 offseason

Carlos Hyde

The Jaguars signed Carlos Hyde to a two-year $4.5 million contract in 2021. If he's on the roster in 2022 he's due to earn nearly $2.4 million, though the Jaguars could cut ties with him at a cost of just $450,000. Moving on from Hyde would ultimately save the Jaguars $2 million, while also opening the door for the return of former first-round pick Travis Etienne, who will likely share the backfield with James Robinson in 2022.

With Robinson and Etienne locked in as the top two rushing options for the Jags going forward, Hyde's role with the team becomes obsolete, and certainly not worth the $2.4 million he'd be due in 2022. As a result, Hyde looks destined to be waived during the offseason as the Jaguars look to push forward with their youth movement.

In 2021, Hyde featured in 12 games for the Jaguars. He rushed 72 times for 253 yards and one touchdown during his second stint with the team, having previously played for Jacksonville in 2018. The journeyman RB was never going to be a long-term solution in the backfield for Jacksonville, as Robinson and Etienne are the clear-cut favorites to sit atop the depth chart next season. So saving $2 million by cutting ties with Hyde will enable the Jaguars to hone in on other areas of need, such as wide receiver and the offensive line.

Hyde has bounced around the NFL throughout his career, struggling to find a permanent home in the league. Since being drafted in the second round in 2014 by the 49ers, Hyde has gone on to play for the Niners, Browns, Texans, Seahawks, and Jaguars. Throughout his career, Hyde has scored 37 rushing touchdowns and three receiving TDs.
