Cam Newton was released by the Carolina Panthers near the end of March. Here we are in early May, and the quarterback still has not found a home.
But where is the most likely landing spot for Newton?
Sportsline currently lists the Jacksonville Jaguars as the betting favorites to land the veteran, putting them at +250. The New England Patriots are in second at +300 with the Washington Redskins coming in third at +350.
The Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks round out the top five.
Here is the thing: Newton does not want to be a backup, which makes his situation pretty dicey. There aren't really any starting jobs available at the moment, meaning that Newton may have to way until someone gets injured to sign.
In the case of the Jaguars, Gardner Minshew is the No. 1 quarterback. Minshew, a sixth-round draft pick out of Washington State, is coming off of a very impressive rookie campaign in which he filled in for an injured Nick Foles and eventually took his job altogether, resulting in Jacksonville trading Foles to the Chicago Bears earlier this offseason.
The Jags seem to view Minshew as the future, so the chances of them signing Newton to start right off the bat seem rather slim. However, the Jaguars do represent an interesting option if Newton is willing to bend his criteria a bit.
If Minshew struggles early in the 2020 season, Jacksonville could then hand the reins over to Newton, who has ample experience under center.
Whether or not Newton would be open to that possibility remains to be seen.
