The Jacksonville Jaguars may have been the most disappointing team in the NFL in 2018, but team owner Shad Khan said through a statement that Doug Marrone's job as head coach is safe, according to the team.
Aside from Marrone, Khan confirmed that VP for football operations Tom Coughlin and GM Dave Caldwell are also safe.
After losing to the Houston Texans in a lifeless performance during their season finale on Sunday afternoon, the Jaguars concluded their 2018 campaign with a record of 5-11.
This came one year after winning the AFC South division and making it all the way to the AFC Championship Game, coming within a quarter of upsetting the New England Patriots and heading to the Super Bowl.
Article Continues BelowThis marked Marrone's second full season with the Jaguars. He was originally hired by the team after Week 14 in 2016 and went 1-1 to close out the year. Overall, he has gone 16-18 thus far in Jacksonville, which is almost identical to the 15-17 record he posted during his two years as head coach of the Buffalo Bills.
Because of the season Marrone and Jacksonville had last year, Khan is opting to bring him back for 2019, but expecting similar results to the 2017-18 campaign may be wishful thinking.
The Jaguars have a lot of issues right now, ranging from their shaky quarterback situation to a seemingly disgruntled running back in Leonard Fournette to a potential upcoming holdout by cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
Of course, the Jags need to take things one step at a time, but at the moment, things are an absolute mess in Jacksonville, as the team's Cinderella run to the conference title game a season ago now feels like a very distant memory.
