When Urban Meyer hired Chris Doyle as one of his assistants after becoming the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, there was controversy surrounding his decision. Nearly a month after the move occurred, Meyer spoke out on the “distraction” that was caused by Doyle being hired.

“I saw the impact of the decision and the distraction it caused,” the new Jaguars coach said, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com. “The most important part of the organization is and always will be our players, and I just — we both felt, we all felt, when I say both, Trent [Baalke] and myself, and then Chris Doyle felt it was best, that this team didn’t need [any distractions]. Everything’s going too well. We hired an excellent staff. We don’t need a distraction, and [to] move forward is the best interest of all.”

Chris Doyle was the strength and conditioning coach at Iowa from 1999 to 2019, where he became a well-known assistant. But a situation involving Doyle, where he was accused of bullying and uttering racist remarks to players at Iowa, led to his dismissal from the program in 2020.

Despite Doyle's questionable past, Urban Meyer still thought it would be a wise idea to pursue Doyle to be one of his assistants. However, after the controversy that was caused, Doyle chose to resign from the Jaguars just a day after accepting the job.

In Meyer's response to the incident, he still doesn't seem to grasp why it was such an issue for him to hire Doyle in the first place. Even though the right move was made for the Jaguars in the end, hopefully Meyer's failure to make judgments on certain hirings isn't a long-term issue.
