The Jacksonville Jaguars' train toward acquiring Nick Foles is picking up steam. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Jacksonville will enter free agency as “the favorite” to sign the former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback.

The Eagles announced on Wednesday that they decided not to use the franchise tag on Foles for 2019, effectively making him a free agent. Though Philadelphia, fully committed to Carson Wentz, considered going that route and subsequently gauging the trade market, executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said he ultimately opted against doing so as to allow Foles the opportunity to sign with the team of his choosing.

Jacksonville reportedly would not have been interested in going after Foles this offseason if the only means of acquiring him was via trade. Now that he's a free agent, though, the Jaguars have every incentive to discuss bringing in the veteran signal-caller.

The notion that they would go in a new direction under center this season gained additional traction on Tuesday when it was reported that incumbent quarterback Blake Bortles put his area home up for sale.

Foles, 30, played in five games for the Eagles last season, filling in for an injured Carson Wentz to great success for the second consecutive season. He guided Philadelphia to three consecutive wins to close out the season, only earning a playoff berth with a 24-0 victory over the Washington Redskins in Week 17. Foles’ meteoric rise to stardom began in 2017, when he took over for Wentz late in the season and proceeded to lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl, winning game MVP honors in the process.
