How deep are Shahid Khan's pockets? Reports surfaced Sunday suggesting the Jacksonville Jaguars are targeting former Florida and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer to replace Doug Marrone. For his part, Meyer has reportedly shown some interest in the job.
However, if the Jags hope to land Meyer, they will have to pay quite the hefty sum.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Urban Meyer is looking for $12 million a year, which would give him the highest annual salary in football alongside New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
That said, Florio noted the market for head coaches has grown larger in recent years, which lends perspective to Meyer's purported price ask:
Article Continues BelowA league source tells PFT that Meyer is looking for $12 million per year.
That’s not a crazy number, given the manner in which the market is going. The Panthers gave Matt Rhule nearly $9 million per year when he made the jump from Baylor to Carolina last year. And plenty of NFL coaches are getting paid in the eight figures annually.
Urban Meyer has not coached since the 2018 season, when he led the Buckeyes to a Rose Bowl victory. He has a 187-32 record in the college ranks, including three national titles (2006, 2008 and 2014).
Jacksonville fired Marrone after a lowly 1-15 mark this season. The Jags made the AFC Championship in 2017, but it has been straight downhill this year, and the team made it clear this past offseason a rebuild is in the cards.
Perhaps Meyer will be the man to guide that rebuild, though he is demanding a rich salary.
