Training camp is already well underway, but the Oakland Raiders are still without Khalil Mack. The star pass rusher continues to hold out camp as he looks to pressure the team into giving him a lucrative new long-term deal. However, it doesn’t seem as if that tactic is working.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, there remains no progress in terms of Mack’s contract talks with the team.
Article Continues BelowHeading to Napa tomorrow for the Raiders and I inquired about the situation surrounding star Khalil Mack: I’m told there is no progress. No optimism. No communication. And so, the holdout continues…
It’s particularly concerning that there doesn’t appear to be any communication between the two sides at the moment. Although, Jon Gruden may refute that report like he did with the report that he and Mack hadn’t even spoken with one another yet.
The Raiders don’t necessarily have to lock Mack up just yet. There hasn’t been talk that Mack is willing to take his holdout to the regular season like Aaron Donald. After Mack makes $13.8 million under his fifth-year option this year, Oakland can still slap the franchise tag on him next offseason. However, that will bring a different set of complications in terms of keeping him long-term.
That’s why it’s more ideal if they can secure their star defensive player’s long-term future as soon as possible. But with no progress or communication to speak of at the moment, the possibility that they get a deal done this year is looking unlikely.
