Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Shane Steichen is impressed with rookie quarterback Justin Herbert thus far.
During a conference call with reporters on Thursday, Steichen said that Herbert “hasn't flinched yet” when facing the pass rush in practice and that's “a good sign for down the road.”

Steichen also said “a lot of the best plays in football come off of scramble plays,” referring to Herbert's mobility being a huge factor in what he brings to the offense.
Herbert, who was the Chargers’ first-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft, practiced for the first time with the team on Monday. According to reporters, Herbert caught the attention of teammates after firing a deep pass to wide receiver Keenan Allen, which was one of the many passes he completed during practice. Nevertheless, Herbert will surely have a lot of catching up to do since he didn't get to get a lot of playing time during the offseason because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The former Oregon quarterback isn't expected to start for the Chargers on Week 1 and for the majority of the 2020 season, however, he is certainly the team’s quarterback of the future.
“We can’t rush this process,” Anthony Lynn said, via the Orange County Register. “It’s going to come to him. He’s an extremely hard working young man. I like where he’s at right now with his development. I think (quarterbacks coach) Pep Hamilton is doing a hell of a job with him.
Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn noted that he'll start 31-year-old veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor for their first regular-season game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 15.
