The Los Angeles Chargers have a bit of an odd situation at quarterback at the moment.

They just selected rookie Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. That would make you think he is set to be the starter. Usually teams do not draft a quarterback that high without having a plan for him in their immediate future.

However, they also have veteran Tyrod Taylor. Taylor has been in the NFL since 2011. While he has not had consistent playing time, there have been some fantastic seasons sprinkled in there.

So could they go with the young and exciting rookie? Or will they decide to give the veteran journeyman another chance at proving he's an underrated asset?

According to Daniel Popper of The Athletic, Taylor is embracing it.

Taylor points out two things right there. First, that he is prepared for competition. He has had to compete for not just a starting spot, but a spot on a roster multiple times in his career.

Then Taylor talks about his respect in the league. He believes in himself. And it's hard to tell whether he believes he gets the respect he deserves from other players and teams or not, but he knows that he definitely deserves their respect.

That's not all though. According to Gilbert Manzano of the O.C. Register and the L.A. Daily News, he's prepared to mentor the young quarterback in Herbert.

Taylor knows all about grinding in the NFL. So he is the perfect veteran quarterback to help mold young up-and-coming stars.

The fact that he is ready to share information and have “open conversations” is great news for Chargers fans. Taylor has long been underrated in the NFL and could guide Herbert to stardom.

The veteran appears ready to compete for the starting job, and don't bet against him. At the same time though, he's going to help mentor Herbert (and Stick) on his quest to become a great NFL quarterback.
