A new report suggests that veteran coach Greg Schiano is thisclose to signing a deal with the New England Patriots to join their coaching staff.

If Ian Rapoport's information is accurate, Schiano will be filling the void left by Brian Flores. Flores is all-but-confirmed as the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins, so Schiano would be an obvious choice to fill in the gaps.

Schiano is looking at the defensive coordinator role for the Super Bowl-bound team.

Prior to being put into consideration for the Patriots, Greg Schiano was the head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Most recently, he was the defensive coordinator at Ohio State before amicably parting ways with the team earlier last year.

Schiano's Bucs participated in joint practices with Belichick’s Patriots for a couple years, and Schiano consistently spoke highly of the Pats during his tenure with the Bucs.

What's interesting to note about this potential hire is that Brian Flores never really got the official title of defensive coordinator with the New England Patriots before he was “hired away” by Miami. It's also unclear why Greg Schiano would be considered a viable “official” hire over Brian Flores, or why Flores was never granted the official title with his former team.

And, prior to Greg Schiano throwing his proverbial hat in the ring, defensive line coach Brendan Daly was seen as the most viable hire to fill Flores' shoes. The current momentum, however, seems to be shifting towards Greg Schiano to take Flores' place.
