In June, it was reported that Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski was “likely” to get his reworked contract, but that it “not imminent.” Over a month later, and that still appears to be the situation.
“Nothing is imminent,” a source with knowledge of the situation told PFT on Thursday per Mike Florio.
Gronkowski is due to make $8 million this year. Last year, the Patriots provided Gronkowski with $5.5 million in added incentives, which he more than earned by delivering an All-Pro season with 69 catches for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns.
Luckily for the Patriots, the slow progress of Gronk’s restructure this year hasn’t caused him to even consider holding out during training camp to expedite the process. He’s reported to camp and claims he’s ready to get to work, even with his new deal still not sealed.
Article Continues BelowThere’s been some talk that until Gronkowski signs his new deal, he’s potentially still available for a trade. But while the Patriots have reportedly considered dealing Gronk this offseason, that now seems unlikely.
Whereas Gronkowski previously hadn’t fully committed to playing in the 2018 season, which likely prompted the Pats to consider trading him, he looks like he’s ready to go. The fact that he’s reported to training camp even without a deal should be a strong indication of his commitment to play.
But despite the somewhat lengthy delay with his deal, it still seems like the most likely scenario that the Patriots reward Gronkowski with his lucrative new contract before the start of the season.
