The New York Giants have been a complete mess recently. Since the 2011 Super Bowl Championship, things have gone downhill for the Giants. They have had losing seasons in five of the last six years. Their one winning season in 2016 ended with a 38-13 loss in Green Bay.
The Giants are a franchise that is known for incredible coaching. That has not been the case since Tom Coughlin left. The Ben McAdoo experiment is one that will go down as one of the worst coaching stints in history. Steve Spagnuolo took over on an interim basis before New York brought in Pat Shurmur. He did not have an impressive first season leading the Giants to 5-11 and another last-place finish in the NFC East.
General manager Dave Gettleman has not made many friends among Giants' fans. They drafted Daniel Jones with the sixth pick of April's draft. Gettleman traded away an elite wide receiver in Odell Beckham Jr. who was one of the biggest fan favorites in New York. If that is not bad enough, Gettleman is on record saying that Eli Manning has a lot of football left in him.
The general direction of the Giants is questionable. This will be another lost season in New York as the Giants try to rebuild their roster back to championship level. Heading into camp, these are three players who could be looking for a new team before the regular season begins.
1. Janoris Jenkins
Jenkins is one of the last pieces left from a dominant defense of 2016. He will turn 31 in October, and carries a cap hit of $14 million this season. This is an unlikely scenario, but it is something to keep an eye on. Especially after looking back at the Giants draft.
New York traded back into the first round to draft Deandre Baker out of Georgia. A defensive back out of Georgia is expected to come in and contribute right away. He was one of three cornerbacks taken by the Giants. They added Julian Love out of Notre Dame in the fourth round and Corey Ballentine in the sixth round. On a team in rebuild mode, Jenkins might be the odd man out.
2. Kyle Lauletta
This is more of a why not roster cut. It is hard to justify Lauletta being on the team when the season starts. Manning will enter the season as the starter. The Giants selecting Jones sixth overall made it clear that he is in line to take over the starting job after Manning. The Lauletta experiment failed.
It was a low risk, low reward situation. Lauletta was a fourth-round pick of the Giants in 2018. He has attempted five passes in a Giants' uniform and has one interception. It would benefit Lauletta to get out of New York and go to a team where he might have an actual shot at being a backup. His reputation does not scream starting quarterback, but he is still young so one team may take a chance.
Let's not forget about his traffic incident with the police on the way to practice. The Jones' draft selection might have been Lauetta's one-way ticket out of town.
3. Cody Latimer
Latimer was a draft pick of the Denver Broncos in 2014. He has never been a top-level receiver in his career. Latimer has had over 10 receptions in an entire season just twice. Last season, Latimer caught 11 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown for the Giants.
The Giants have done their best to replace Beckham in free agency. They have Sterling Shepard who has turned into a prized piece to their offense. The Giants acquired Corey Coleman during the 2018 season.
The big free-agent signing was Golden Tate who will come to New York after spending time in Philadelphia. Tate gives the Giants a legitimate No. 1 receiver. It is not easy to replace a receiver of Beckham's caliber, but the Giants are putting effort into it.
Where does this leave Latimer? He is clearly a bench player, but he could be cut before the season. With Tate, Shepard, Coleman, and tight end Evan Engram, the Giants will have plenty of pass catchers. Latimer will not have a chance to get his first 20 catch season.
