The New York Giants have found themselves in an interesting dilemma involving star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.'s long-term future with the franchise. This has created the conversation around possibly trading him at some point this offseason.

What has made this a more complicated situation is that Beckham Jr. is in the fifth-year option of his deal and could threaten to not report to the team's activities until a new deal is in place. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated in the most recent edition of the MMQB Podcast, he believes that April 9 will be a telling day of how things will transpire between both sides.

“I think the key date is April 9. It is the first day of the offseason program. April 9th is the first day that Pat Shurmur will be in front of the Giants as their new head coach and April 9th is the day that players can show up for the first time in mass to the facility and it's voluntary. If Odell Beckham shows on April 9th, then there is a good chance they can work things out. He gives them a couple of good months of work then they eventually do a deal and he's a New York Giant for a long time. However, if he does not show up, then we are talking about something else.”

If Beckham Jr. does decide to hold out, it does force the Giants hand to have to either re-sign him a new deal or move on from him altogether to avoid any further distraction. New York looks to have no interest in paying him the $20 million annually on a new extension that he is reportedly looking to land.

The Giants have grown tired of the constant distraction and questionable decision making from Beckham Jr. that has shifted the focus away from the football field. This has begun to outweigh his elite level of production that is leading to the franchise listening to offers for him.

What this points to is that if Beckham Jr. does decide to hold in training camp, it could quickly become an even stickier situation in New York. Only time will tell what route this entire ordeal will head.
