On April 25th, there were boos echoing throughout Nashville, Tennessee when the New York Giants selected Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick. The same couldn't be said in Jones' preseason debut against the New York Jets.
There were three first-round quarterbacks to make their NFL debut on Thursday night. Among them, Jones was the highest-graded first-round quarterback in Week 1 of the preseason per PFF with a grade of a 91.3.
The Giants rookie quarterback completed all five of his passing attempts for 67 yards and a touchdown against the Jets. That all came on Jones' first and only drive of the game as the crowd cheered their rookie quarterback on.
Unfortunately, Jones' day would come to an abrupt halt when the game was suspended due to lightning and thunder. The Giants were able to see exactly what they wanted to from the Duke product in his first exhibition game.
Aside from Jones, first-rounders Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins also made their preseason debuts. Murray, the No. 1 overall pick, completed six of his seven passes for 44 yards. Similarly to Jones, Murray only saw one series with the Arizona Cardinals.
As for Haskins, the Ohio State product struggled to keep his poise as he completed eight of his 14 attempts for 117 yards and two interceptions. Haskins stayed on the field for six series with the Washington Redskins, receiving a grade of a 41.3 from PFF.
It's only the preseason so it's hard to judge any of these guys in their first taste of the NFL. However, among the three first-round quarterbacks, Jones impressed the most out of the rookies.
Currently, the Giants don't believe there's a quarterback controversy brewing in New York. But if Jones maintains this level of play, it's going to be tough for Pat Shurmur to deny his entry to the field.
