New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is not the same player he once was. That is a fact. But are we exaggerating just how far he has fallen?

Giants general manager Dave Gettleman seems to think so, saying that he does not believe Manning is finished:

“I really believe there has been a false narrative out there that Eli is finished, he’s done,” said Gettleman, per NFL Network. “He had a heck of a year. … Eli is still a quality NFL quarterback. It wears me out, it really does.”

Gettleman actually makes somewhat of a point.

While Manning is far from the same quarterback who led the Giants to a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots back in February 2012, he did not have a terrible year in 2018, as he threw for 4,299 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while completing 66 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 92.4.

The 38-year-old is entering the final year of his deal, and the consensus is that he will be done in New York after this season. That's why most feel that the Giants will draft a quarterback with the sixth overall pick of the first round of next month's NFL Draft and then have that signal-caller learn under Manning for a year before turning the reins over to the youngster in 2020.

New York is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which it won just five games. The Giants have made only one playoff appearance since last winning the Super Bowl during that aforementioned 2011-12 season.
