Eli Manning's time in the Meadowlands could be coming to a close following the conclusion of the 2019 NFL regular season with his longtime New York Giants. The veteran quarterback lost his starting quarterback role as rookie Daniel Jones ascended the job under center, and it's unclear whether Manning will be back with the Giants in 2020 or join another NFL franchise.
Manning, 38, in speaking to the press on Monday, inched closer to facing the end of his storied professional career, via Dan Benton in Giants Wire.
“I doubt it. I doubt it,” Manning said. “Backing up is not real fun.”
“I don’t think so, but I guess I would think about it,” a smiling Manning said before adding he’d coach his daughter’s basketball team.
Manning started for the Giants in their first two games, looking mostly lost in back-to-back losses. Then New York's sixth overall selection in 22-year-old Duke product Jones took center stage for the G-Men and delivered two victories. The Giants did not experience many more W's in 2019, although Manning did return to start in Weeks 14-15 while the first-year signal-caller was sidelined with a high ankle sprain. Manning led the Giants to a win in Week 15, likely his last start for the team, defeating the Miami Dolphins at home three weeks ago.
Manning rejecting the idea that he would play backup further signals, the two-time Super Bowl MVP is certainly heading to greener pastures and retiring. However, one sliver of hope could point to four-time Pro-Bowler seeking a new opportunity as a starter on another team.
