Cleveland Browns star Baker Mayfield caused an uproar with his comments on New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. Now Jones' teammates are coming to his defense. Tight end Evan Engram in particular took umbrage with Mayfield's comments, per Matt Lombardo of NJ.com.
“It’s kind of dumb,” Engram said. “There’s two types of people in this world, there’s people who run their mouths and cry for attention and there’s people who put their head down, get to work and get stuff done. That’s everything Daniel’s been doing.”
Ever since the Giants drafted Jones sixth, there's been a lot of blowback. The media was relentlessly critical of the selection, so Jones is used to dealing with a lot of outside noise. Fortunately, Evan Engram said the rookie has already done a good job of developing thick skin.
“I see him as a guy that pays the criticism no mind,” Engram said. “Personally, I think he hears it and it’s kind of hard to ignore. Especially being in New York with the media being so crazy, but he’s the type of guy who’s real humble, real focused and not really worried about any of that.”
That's a good attitude to have, and one he'll need to have if he's going to succeed Eli Manning in the New York media market. Jones has surprised a lot of people with his strong play in the preseason thus far, and he's already putting pressure on Manning.
It doesn't sound like Jones will be losing too much sleep over the fact that Mayfield was skeptical of his selection, but it's good to see his teammates such as Evan Engram having his back like this.
