Despite the opening game loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants head coach Joe Judge was still proud of his quarterback in Daniel Jones. The sophomore threw two interceptions which would have made Big Blue inch closer to pull off an upset win against the Steelers.
Judge acknowledged the mistakes made by Jones and saw it as growing pains that they all have to go through especially with a young playmaker at the helm:
“He had two throws I know he wants back. Down at the goal line, that’s something we can’t have happen,” he said. “Look, I’ll talk to Daniel a little bit more about it, I’ll watch the tape and make sure we clean up everything involved. That’s definitely something you can’t have, 19-play drive and come away with no points, especially down there in the low red [zone]. That’s not acceptable, but I’m proud of the way he played aggressive, I’m proud of the way this team stuck together.”
Despite being sacked three times by the stifling Steelers' defensive line, Jones still showed flashes of potential throughout the game. He was able to locate sophomore wide receiver Darius Slayton and threw two touchdown passes for him in the end zone.
However, another potent weapon in running back Saquon Barkley failed to get going during the game which contributed to a low scoring output for the home team.
In the end, the veteran experience of the entire Steelers unit was shown as they pulled off a comfortable 26-16 win against the young Giants squad.
Big Blue will aim for a better outing as they challenge the Chicago Bears in a Week 2 matchup on September 20.
