The New York Giants reportedly have a plan in place to transition out of the Eli Manning era. Manning, now a 37-year-old, has spent fourteen seasons with the Giants and won two Super Bowls. While he has had success in New York, father time is around the corner, and he doesn't have much longer as a starting quarterback in the NFL.
According to Darin Gantt of NBC Sports, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur has a backup plan that sources outside the Giants organization haven't considered.
The Giants recently cut 2017 third-rounder Davis Webb, leaving Alex Tanney and Kyle Lauletta the secondary options to fill in for Manning. The Giants seem to be comfortable with the 30-year-old Tanney being the primary backup while 22-year-old Lauletta develops.
“Here’s the thing with a veteran backup quarterback: They can go in and function with very few reps,” Shurmur said. “I think that’s an attribute that I look for in a guy that could potentially be a backup to a guy like Eli, because they don’t get that many reps during the training sessions.”
Odell Beckham Jr. is one of the best receivers in the game. Saquon Barkley is a budding star with unlimited potential as a runner and a receiver out of the backfield. If the Giants want to maximize the usefulness of their talented skill position players, they'll need a secure option at the quarterback position to get them the ball.
Manning threw for 3,468 yards last season, marking his lowest total since 2008. He should get the benefit of the doubt since Beckham Jr. missed a majority of last season with a broken ankle. However, if Manning doesn't produce this year, it could signal the beginning of a serious decline.
