Garrett was one of a few new additions to the Giants' coaching staff when he joined in 2020. He became the offensive coordinator under Joe Judge, who was hired just a few weeks before Garrett.
The team relieved Garrett of his position following the Giants' brutal 30-10 loss on Monday Night Football. His offense struggled to put up numbers against Todd Bowles' defense, and things seemed to get worse as the game went on.
The Bucs scored an early touchdown in the first quarter, while the Giants only managed a field goal after a nearly seven minute possession. The Bucs ended the quarter with a field goal to make it 10-3.
The Giants scored their only touchdown in the second quarter following a Tom Brady interception deep in Tampa Bay territory. Brady quickly recovered with a touchdown to add to their early quarter field goal.
It was a one score game going into the third quarter at 17-10, but things just seemed to keep getting worse for Garrett's offense. The Bucs defense shut out the Giants for the entire second half and added 13 more points to their dominating win.
This loss showed the offense's weaknesses in more numbers than just the score. Daniel Jones had two interceptions, and the offense only put up 233 total yards.
Going forward, it is expected that the 3-7 Giants will go with Freddie Kitchens as their acting offensive coordinator. Kitchens is head coach Judge's senior offensive assistant.
