The New York Giants have signed linebacker David Mayo to a three-year, $8.4 million contract extension, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Mayo signed with the Giants just before the 2019 campaign started. He went on to play in all 16 games, making 13 starts and registering 82 tackles, a couple of sacks and a fumble recovery.
The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Texas State, was originally selected by the Carolina Panthers in the fifth round (169th pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.
He appeared in 12 contests during his rookie year, logging 10 tackles. It was more of the same for Mayo in 2016, as he participated in 15 games and finished with 19 stops.
Mayo then played in every game in both 2017 and 2018, making four starts during that time. Over those two seasons, he totaled 33 tackles.
While Mayo is certainly not a star and doesn't move the needle all that much for New York, his durability is valuable. And the Giants have plenty of cap room to add some more defensive talent this offseason.
Article Continues BelowTimes have been rather tough in New York.
Since 2012, the Giants have made just one playoff appearance, which came in 2016 when New York went 11-5 and ultimately fell to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round.
Since then, Big Blue has not posted a winning season, and this past year, the Giants won just four games.
However, due to the presence of young quarterback Daniel Jones, running back Saquon Barkley and some other impressive pieces on offense, there are reasons to be optimistic about the future for New York.
