The jury is still out on Daniel Jones, and is likely to be for the foreseeable future. The New York Giants seem intent on playing out the 2019 season with Eli Manning under center, meaning the No. 6 overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft is poised to ride the pine until a year from now – at the absolute earliest.

Regardless, many Giants fans, league followers, and NFL analysts believe New York erred by using such a high draft pick on the Duke quarterback, who almost surely would have been available later in the first round. Not everyone agrees with the widespread criticism levied at general manager Dave Gettleman for taking Jones in the top-10, though.

This kid has talent,” an anonymous NFC scout told Steven Taranto of 247 Sports. “He's got a good-enough arm, all the intangibles, and the perfect temperament for New York. Fans who saw a couple of highlights and listened to some (person) on the radio may think this was a terrible pick. But no one around the league does.

“The criticism of this pick is incredible. No one thinks it was a big mistake. I don't know what the fans are thinking. What did he do to deserve getting booed?”

Another NFC executive echoed similar sentiments, while acknowledging that No. 6 might have been a bit rich for Jones' selection.

“We all liked this kid. He's not an all-time great prospect, but he's a good one. And (the Giants) needed a quarterback, too. It made perfect sense. I don't understand the hits (Gettleman) is taking.”

Jones threw for 2,674 yards, 22 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while completing 60.5 percent of his passes last season. He didn't take a snap with the Giants' first-team offense during the first week of training camp.
