Since suffering a high ankle sprain two weeks ago in preseason action, New York Giants star wideout Odell Beckham Jr. has had his eye on being back on the field for the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Following Wednesday's practice, Beckham Jr. stated that he wouldn't rule out being able to play in Week 1, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.com.

“I wouldn’t count it out,” Beckham said, “and my heart’s just not going to make this easy. So I can say it’s a day-to-day thing. I’m really trying to get better. It’s been two weeks. I’m itching but just patience and trusting.”

The 24-year-old has yet to be able to practice with the team but has increased his individual workout over the last few days. He has suffered the injury against the Cleveland Browns on Aug. 21 after he was tackled low by defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

Although Beckham has his eyes set on getting back on the field for the season opener, the Giants may choose to keep him off the field to avoid any potential setbacks from arising. His absence should shift more of responsibility in the passing game to both second-year wideout Sterling Shepard and offseason addition Brandon Marshall, who is expected to play despite suffering a shoulder injury in the same preseason game against the Browns.

Upon his return, Beckham Jr. will re-assume his role as the primary receiving threat for quarterback Eli Manning. In his first three seasons in the league, he has emerged as one of the top wide receivers. He's the only player in NFL history to record 90 or more catches, 1,300 or more receiving yards, and 10 or more touchdowns in their first three campaigns.
