The New York Giants have a looming cloud over the franchise concerning star wide receiver Odell Beckham's contract situation.Beckham Jr. is set to enter the final year of his rookie deal, which has put his long-term future in New York up in the air.
According to Tom Rock of Newsday, Giants co-owner John Mara provided an update on the situation on Friday morning stating that a meeting with new head coach Pat Shurmur will help him determine how things will go.
Mara on Odell's contract: "We'll get something done at some point. I want first Pat to sit down with him and them to have an understanding of how we're going to act going forward. I have a lot of confidence that that's going to work out well. But we'll see."

The Giants clearly want to work out a new contract with Beckham Jr., but a conversation with Shurmur will help give them a better idea of where he fits into the offensive game plan. The 25-year-old is the team's unquestioned top receiving talent, but there has yet to be any clarity on what type of role he will play in the passing game.
This discussion with Shurmur could help determine the extent of the contract the team is willing to offer the Pro Bowl wide receiver. There doesn't appear to be any rush as the offseason is still several weeks from getting underway, and Beckham Jr. is already under contract for the 2018 season.
He holds plenty of value to the franchise as one of the best players in the league at his position that has been a record-setting pace. In his first three seasons, he was the first player in NFL history to post at least 90 catches, 1,200 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns in each of their first three years. He is also the fastest to reach 300 career receptions and 4,000 career receiving yards.
Although Beckham Jr. saw his 2017 campaign end prematurely due to a broken ankle, he is expected to be ready well ahead of next season. All in all, he should be in line to receive a long-term lucrative contract offer that makes him one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the league.
