There is a newfound sense of optimism surrounding the New York Giants going into the 2018 NFL season. The franchise is on cloud nine with the arrival of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. at training camp.
It goes without saying that the Giants have made some significant changes this offseason, and that may apply to Beckham's role in the offense as well.
According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, he was spotted taking plenty of reps from the slot position:
Odell is getting a lot of work from the slot. Something that he didn’t do nearly enough of in the past. Matchup nightmare inside.
Beckham's potential transition inside would be interesting, to say the least. The Giants' star has established himself as one of the premier wideouts in the league lining up on the outside. However, it appears the new coaching staff is looking to utilize his skill set from a number of spots on the field.
There are plenty of reasons why New York may be experimenting with Beckham in the slot. There is no doubt that defenses have started to scheme around slowing the three-time Pro Bowler down. The Giants will be able to keep the defense on their toes by moving him around.
Furthermore, a player of Beckham's status is often lined up against the opposing team's best cornerback. This means defensive coordinators will have to think twice about having their shutdown corner shadow him in the slot given the lack of sure coverage on the outside. That said, it will be interesting to see if this becomes a regular occurrence for Beckham.
