The New York Giants officially ushered in the Joe Schoen era on Wednesday afternoon. Several key areas of the team's future were discussed as the Giants' new general manager spoke to reporters.
Schoen professed a desire to build around Daniel Jones, emphasizing his abilities and he looks into his potential coaching staff hires. He stressed the importance of improving the offensive line and working with Saquon Barkley. Everything he said now has to be shown in order to legitimize his vision. However, one thing that Schoen will not be able to do was set in stone.
Giants owner John Mara made himself clear that the franchise will not trade for Deshaun Watson, listing several reasons why.
John Mara asked bluntly about Deshaun Watson: “We’re not trading for Deshaun Watson.” The allegations, salary cap and all that exists with the situation is “not the right fit” for the Giants.

The sexual assault allegations around Watson provide more than enough reason to stay clear of him. The salary cap implications make it much harder for the Giants to pursue the Houston Texans quarterback, anyway. Schoen discussed the Giants' absurd salary cap issues, as New York is already over the cap for next year. Watson is on a contract that features over $110 million guaranteed.

Although the Giants desperately need an improvement at the quarterback spot, staying clear of Watson makes sense for his off-the-field concerns and for team-building reasons. With limited options in the draft, it seems like Jones will get another crack at securing the Giants quarterback spot.
