New York Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has continued this offseason to work his way back the broken ankle that he suffered last October that has seen him participate in team workouts. Beckham Jr. has committed to going through these drills without a new extension in place that he has been eyeing for the last several months.
However, there had been talk that the 25-year-old wasn't partaking in the entire offseason team workouts despite being medically cleared to do so. With that in mind, head coach Pat Shurmur shot down that notion by stating that Beckham Jr. has performed everything that has been asked of him, according to Kimberley Jones of the NFL Network.
I asked Pat Shurmur about the notion that Odell Beckham Jr declined to participate in team drills despite being cleared and asked to do so.
Shurmur’s response: “Totally not true.”
In other words, Beckham did everything asked of him. And #NYG will continue to be cautious.— Kim Jones (@KimJonesSports) June 12, 2018
This quickly quiets down any noise around the team that there is a sense of disgruntlement from Beckham Jr. regarding his contract situation with the Giants. He has yet to voice anything in that regard and has been completely involved with the team since being medically cleared.
There hasn't been any talk about there being any internal conflict arising from the lack of progress toward a new deal.
Instead, Beckham Jr. has been a full participant on the practice in the last few weeks that could help resolve the contract situation on its own. He is in the fifth-year option of his rookie deal that has placed a sense of urgency from the franchise to get something worked out at some point in the coming months.
Beckham Jr. has been the focal point of the offense that has shown that he has game-changing talent when healthy.
If anything, it has been an encouraging offseason for the last several weeks for Beckham Jr. as he's shown much maturity and increased commitment to the team. All of this may simply trend toward a new lucrative extension being put in place.
