New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard was pretty psyched for Odell Beckham Jr. after he became the highest-paid wideout in the game. And now that OBJ has finally gotten his money, Shepard expects his superstar teammate to rack up some hardware.
Per Tom Rock of Newsday, Shepard expects Beckham to win this year’s Comeback Player of the Year Award.
“You look at the road that those guys who have won it go through, it’s tough, man,” Shepard said. “He came back way faster than what people expected. It’s been a long road. I remember going to the hospital and seeing him in the hospital bed on all that medicine. I remember those days like it was yesterday. And then you see where he is now, you can’t help but be happy for him and pull for him all the way.”
Beckham is still working his way back from the broken ankle which ended his 2017 season after just four games. He hasn’t featured in preseason, but chances are he should be on the field in time for their Week 1 matchup against the Jaguars.
Beckham will face some stiff competition for the award this season, with the likes of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, and Cardinals running back David Johnson all in the running.
But Beckham has proven that when healthy, he is among the most productive wideouts in the game. Apart from his injury-shortened 2017, OBJ has topped 90 catches, 1,300 yards, and 10 touchdowns in his other three seasons in the league. If he stays healthy and produces like he normally does, Beckham should be a strong bet to deliver on Shepard’s lofty expectation of him.
