The New York Giants kicked off their training camp in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Thursday. Although, an injury to wide receiver Sterling Shepard has served a blow to the Giants locker room.

According to the Giants official Twitter account, Shepard suffered a fractured thumb in New York's first practice. Shepard will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis before he is cleared to return.

For most fractured thumbs, the timetable for recovery is usually four to six weeks. Therefore, there is a chance that Shepard misses the first week of the season.

Losing Shepard could prove to be detrimental to the Giants as the team traded Odell Beckham Jr. earlier this offseason. While Beckham Jr. was with the Giants, Shepard did the majority of his work from the slot.

Now, Shepard is expected to make the transition to the outside as the number one wideout in the Giants offense. Luckily for him, having a connection with Eli Manning already helps speed up the process.

With Shepard missing time, New York will get to see how Golden Tate can fit in the offense. They'll also get to see what they have in Corey Coleman and Cody Latimer.

As for Coleman, he was a former first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft with the Cleveland Browns. This could possibly be his final chance at securing a vital role in an offense as a wide receiver.

The NFL regular season kicks off in a little over a month, and the Giants could be without Sterling Shepard when they take on the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.
