It is no secret that New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is a man of many indulgences. Apparently, water is not one of them.
Beckham has been seen having to get IVs on the sideline during games in the 2018 NFL season. According to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, he attributes it to his distaste for water:
He said “I don’t like water.”
He said he’s trying to be better about drinking it but he doesn’t like the “squishy” feeling it makes in his stomach. He said that could explain his recent need for in-game IVs.
It may seem ludicrous that a professional athlete does not ‘like' water and that is because it is. Not only is it a basic component of all living things but it is essential for survival. The notion of Beckham not getting his fill of H2O suggests a severe lack of oversight on his part.
It is clear that Beckham has likely relied on Gatorade and other flavored beverages for his hydration. However, it seems to finally be taking its toll. He is one of the most explosive playmakers in the league. A big part of his game is his athletic ability which allows him to outrun and outjump defenders. He cannot do that when his body is constantly fighting off the symptoms of dehydration.
Still, there is no doubt that Beckham's problems this season go beyond his distaste for water. He is in the midst of perhaps the worst statistical season of his career thanks to New York's struggles on offense. Yet, he has still managed to make headlines with his displays of frustration on the sidelines. He is hoping to get back on track Monday night against a porous Atlanta Falcons secondary.
