The New York Giants were originally planning on releasing linebacker BJ Goodson but have found a trade partner in the Green Bay Packers according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.

Goodson survived cutdown day but the team decided to sign free agent linebacker David Mayo, who was waived by the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.

Goodson was a 4th-round pick in 2016 and last season he started 13 games for the Giants last year. During training camp he was tumbling down the draft board and at times he was practicing with the third strings, and at times he was actually demoted all the way to the fourth string.

One of the big issues for Goodson is the Giants are now playing a base nickel defense which meant Tae Davis took most of the snaps next to inside linebacker Alec Ogletree.

In the fourth preseason game, Goodson saw a lot of playing time, which was a sign that his days on the Giants could be short-lived.

The Giants took Ryan Connelly in the 5th round in April and it's clear with the team moving on from Goodson, they are confident that he can be trusted.

For the Packers, this move gives the team some more depth, and it's something they desperately need. The team drafted Rashan Gary in the first round, but he has struggled during the preseason getting adjusted to his new role.

Goodson should help the team if Gary struggles early on, or if one or two guys go down with injuries.
