The Denver Broncos wide receiving corps received a shot of life during the 2020 NFL Draft, adding the services of much-heralded wideouts Jerry Jeudy (first round, Alabama) and K.J. Hamler (second round, Penn State).
Rather than being concerned about the additional competition and crowded airspace to throw the ball, the team's top wide receiver from last year, Courtland Sutton, is amped by the additions.
On a conference call on Thursday (via Josh Alper at Pro Football Talk) Sutton said that the wide receiver room “is going to be exciting.” He knows the influx of talent that second-year quarterback Drew Lock will have at his disposal.
Sutton had a breakout campaign in 2019, which led to his first career Pro Bowl appearance. He hauled in 72 receptions for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns, adding another on the ground. That level of production came as eight games were started by Joe Flacco, before the signal caller spot in Denver became more of an unknown down the stretch.
While many may have raised an eyebrow at Denver selecting wide receivers with each of their first two selections, there was an apparent need. Aside from Sutton, Jeudy and Hamler, the Broncos' wideout corps featured the likes of Diontae Spencer, Tim Patrick and DaeSean Hamilton, all of whom are far from established weapons.
Despite the roller coaster offensive performances in 2019 during Vic Fangio's first season at the helm, the Broncos managed to win seven games. By Sutton's hopes, they can flip the script quickly with the new talent in the receivers room.
The Broncos and their new-look offense are set to open the 2020 NFL regular season on Sept. 14 during the first installment of Monday Night Football.
