Quarterback Jameis Winston is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. It remains uncertain if his current team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are willing to resign him this offseason. According to Marc Sessler of NFL.com, Winston is the riskiest free agent of 2020.
“With a record-setting seven pick-sixes in 2019, Winston appears to be done in Tampa — with the Bucs reportedly hot to trot for Brady — and realistically out of rope as a starting NFL quarterback. No franchise can sell Winston as a QB1 due to his perilous ball security. The risk is reduced in a backup role, but that scenario screams for some under-fire coach turning to Jameis in, say, Week 7 — and suffering the consequences.”
There's no doubt that Winston is one of the riskiest quarterbacks in free agency this offseason. This past season, the 26-year old threw a whopping 30 interceptions in 16 games. Despite his interceptions, Winston completed 60.7 percent of his passes for an astonishing 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns.
Nevertheless, it's uncertain how Winston will perform next season. Winston most likely won't be getting a long term deal with the Buccaneers this offseason, as they have their eyes set on veteran quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Teddy Bridgewater, and Philip Rivers.
The best option for Winston next season would be backing up a veteran quarterback to get some learning experience. Winston has proven that he could throw and score the ball; however, his interceptions still remain an issue. Nevertheless, Winston could possibly be getting a one-year deal this offseason to prove himself once again.
