The Washington Redskins have inquired about trading into the Top 5 of the 2019 NFL Draft.

NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo (via NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano) reported the news on April 23.

In his latest mock draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (who own the rights to the sixth overall pick) can possibly trade down to Washington (which will draft 15th overall), per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. In that scenario, The Redskins can draft Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

Better yet, Washington will beat its NFC East division rivals, the New York Giants, to Haskins. Both teams need signal callers desperately.

The Redskins lost Alex Smith to a gruesome broken leg injury in December. He will most likely sit out the entire 2019 NFL season. While they have Case Keenum and Colt McCoy, drafting Haskins is a better long-term move. That may also spell the end of Smith's tenure in the nation's capital.

For their part, the Giants have yet to offer two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning a contract extension. The 38-year-old Manning enters the last year of a four-year, $84 million extension he signed on September 11, 2015.

Nobody knows for sure if the 2019 NFL season is his last. Manning can pass on his knowledge to a quarterback like Haskins before he hangs up his cleats.

News of the Redskins pining for a quarterback in the draft isn't new. They need to stabilize their precarious quarterback situation – not just for this season, but for the foreseeable future.

If Washington does trade up, the move could contradict Redskins senior vice president for player personnel Doug Williams' earlier statement. Williams told The Washington Post on April 22 there's a possibility the Redskins won't trade up.

I'm going to go on the record and say that's a possibility that we won't trade up, but there's a great possibility we'll trade back if the opportunity came.

Note Williams said, “That's a possibility.” Nothing is set in stone. It will be exciting to see what Williams and Co. will do on draft day.
