The New England Patriots are reportedly close to getting a reworked contract done for All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe.
Howe notes that it’s still unknown whether Gronk will sign an extension or if it will be just a raise in salary.
The two sides have been working on renewing the terms of Gronkowski's contract since he told Bill Belichick last month that he’s committed to playing this season. Gronk had previously refused to commit to playing in 2018 and contemplated retirement after the team’s Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Article Continues BelowGronkowski still has two more years on his current deal with the Patriots. He’s set to earn $9 million this season and $10 million in 2019. He earned over $10 million last season, including $5.5 million in incentives after earning First-Team All-Pro honors. Gronk had a terrific season as he had 1,084 receiving yards on 69 catches and eight touchdowns in 14 games.
The Patriots also reworked his deal last year, which made it possible for him to earn those incentives. Due to league rules that prohibit players from restructuring their contracts twice in a calendar year, Gronk can’t officially sign a new deal until Thursday, May 24.
Gronkowski hasn’t taken part in Patriots’ voluntary offseason workouts along with Tom Brady and has instead been working out with Brady and trainer Alex Guerrero at the TB12 training center. However, he is reportedly expected to attend OTAs at some point. Patriots owner Robert Kraft also confirmed that Gronk and Brady will be present for the team’s mandatory minicamp next month.
