Russell Wilson won't get to face Drew Brees when the Saints roll into Seattle on Sunday. Following a thumb surgery, New Orleans will play both Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill at quarterback. Wilson, the Seahawks starter, must be saddened by that news, considering Brees is his “favorite player to ever play the game.”
Said Wilson on Thursday, via USA Today's Andy Patton:
“Drew, he’s probably my favorite player to ever play the game. I’ve watched a lot of film on him. I’ve studied his game, got to know him over the years. We’ve become close and everything else. I ask him for a lot of advice just about life, about kids and schools and this and that. Obviously, the game too.”
Wilson and Brees are both amongst the NFL elite at the quarterback position. Both are efficient quarterbacks that know how to win games in its waning moments; both are also regulars in the NFL playoffs.
Maybe the most common trait both boast is their height (or lack thereof). Brees, 6-foot, helped revolutionized the bucking of the pro-height trend at quarterback in the NFL. Wilson, 5-foot-11, appreciates that.
“I think about his legacy and what he’s meant to the game,” said Wilson. “He’s helped open up the door for me to play as a shorter quarterback. There’s been some guys before him too that I know he would acknowledge as well. Guys like Doug Flutie as well and others. Steve Young and different players. I think about Drew and his ability to make great plays and just when he’s in the game, he’s a spectacular football player. One of the best to ever step on the field.”
Though the two won't be able to face each other on Sunday, there is a possibility that they will meet up against in the playoffs, if each respective team gets there. The Seahawks will face the Brees-less Saints on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
