The NFL continues to discriminate against coaches of color, but they did take a step in the right direction in fixing that, announcing every single team must hire a minority offensive assistant for the 2022 campaign. Nevertheless, Seattle Seahawks Pete Carroll made sure to give his strong opinion on the matter during league meetings last week in Florida.
Article Continues BelowSeattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll called out NFL owners during the league's meetings last week in Florida, saying the hiring of minority candidates won't improve until owners accept that there are candidates out there different than themselves, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.
The longtime Seahawks coach, though, told the group that such policies will never be enough until the owners themselves change.
“He just went off,” a source told Schefter of Carroll's comments in the meeting. “He was saying, you can do anything but until owners get to know these candidates before the actual interviews and understand that they have to hire people who are different than them, it's not going to really change.”
Basically, the Seahawks coach is suggesting the owners take interest in really getting to know each and every possible coach before doing interviews and such. Understanding them on a personal level, no matter their color, should be important.
According to Adam Schefter, the owners were quite upset with Carroll's comments as well. He does have a point, though. They're so stuck in their ways and that's part of the reason change isn't happening. But, with Brian Flores' lawsuit and the likes of Lovie Smith getting hired as an HC again, the NFL is making a point of trying to change the narrative. Let's hope it continues.
