The Seattle Seahawks didn't have a clear-cut lead back heading into the regular season, but head coach Pete Carroll says Chris Carson “really took the lead” in the 27-24 Week 1 loss to the Denver Broncos, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.

“Chris I thought looked really good,” Carroll said. “He was really aggressive and did what he could with the plays that he had. Rashaad looked a little rusty to me and I visited with him about it. He really only had one good week of practice and coming back and it wasn’t enough — he needed more work and he wasn’t as responsive as he has been earlier on before he had to sit out for a while, and so he’s got to work real hard to make sure that he is ready to go and we will work him in. We love the chance of getting him in there. We are going to keep looking for it. But Chris really took the lead at that position after that game.”

Carson and Rashaad Penny both had seven carries against the Broncos, but Carson racked up 51 yards while Penny was only able to gain 8 yards.

Carroll thinks a big reason why Penny struggled was because the time he missed during the offseason with a broken finger. It doesn't mean it can't change later in the season, but right now Carroll will be treating Carson like the lead back.

Even with Carson taking on this role, the Seahawks need better production out of the running back position as they prepare for Week 2 against the Chicago Bears. They didn't have a balanced attack against the Broncos, which hurt the flow of the offense.
