Russell Wilson is the Seattle Seahawks' starting quarterback for the long haul. That much we know for sure.
But what about the Seahawks' backup quarterback?
It looks like it could come down to two veterans in Geno Smith and Paxton Lynch, both of whom have some experience starting NFL games before. So, it's not like Seattle is going into this situation blind.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll says that the competition for the No. 2 signal-caller spot is entirely up for grabs:
Article Continues Below“it’s just going to be a wide open competition and what we need to do is a really good job of giving them an equitable shot at it with reps, the people they work with and all that kind of stuff and that will be a big plan,” said Carroll, per Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk. “It reminds me of when Russ was coming up in his first year. We had the whole thing mapped out. I don’t think that they’re going to catch Russ, but you know, you never know. That’s what competition is all about. Their reps in particular are really going to be monitored strictly to see that we can get a great gauge. Let the games begin.”
Of course, if you're the Seahawks' backup quarterback, you probably should not plan on playing all that much.
Since entering the league in 2012, Wilson has not missed a single start, and over that span, he has made five Pro Bowls while leading the Seahawks to a Super Bowl title and a pair of Super Bowl appearances.
The 30-year-old, who signed a record-setting contract extension earlier this offseason, is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he threw for 3,448 yards, 35 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
