Heading into the 2022 NFL offseason as the fifth-longest tenured head coach in the league (12 seasons), the Seattle Seahawks' Pete Carroll is in a more precarious position than the four ahead of him on the list. Bill Belichick (22 seasons,) Sean Payton (16 seasons,) Mike Tomlin (15 seasons,) and John Harbaugh (14 seasons) are all as safe as they come as far as head coaches go.
That is despite the fact that–of that group–only Belichick and Tomlin made the playoffs in 2021 and Carroll played in the toughest division in the NFL in 2021 as the NFC West was the only division with three playoff teams. According to Bell, this is the same thing that Carroll said to the Seahawks in a team meeting after the 2011 season, which was also at the start of Kam Chancellor's and Richard Sherman's careers. That quote from Carroll ended up being prophetic, as that squad went on to play in two Super Bowls and win one Lombardi Trophy.
