The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have become the latest team to show interest in signing former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported the Bucs are one of “several teams” making an effort to sign Fournette.

The Jaguars released Fournette on Monday, ending a rather tumultuous three-year tenure.

Fournette looked like a potential star early in his rookie season, rushing for over 130 yards in consecutive games in Weeks 5 and 6 during the 2017 NFL season, but questions about Fournette's conditioning and weight followed him into the offseason, and things then began to spiral.

The former LSU star played in just eight games in 2018 due to injuries and suspension. He rushed for 1,152 yards on 4.3 yards per carry last season for the Buccaneers' fellow Floridian NFL franchise and racked up 1,674 yards from scrimmage, but also just finished with three total touchdowns.

Jacksonville declined Fournette's fifth-year option and tried to trade him, to no avail. For his part, Fournette handled his release with class.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians was rather mum when asked whether the team would consider signing Fournette.

Arians said Fournette was a talented player, but also left things at “We have to see where he fits.”

Adding Fournette to the mix would indeed crowd the Bucs backfield. Tampa Bay had already signed veteran running back LeSean McCoy to a one-year deal, and Arians has been vocal about his affinity for Ronald Jones.

At the same time, the Bucs have not been afraid to get aggressive this offseason, as they clearly showed by signing Tom Brady and acquiring Rob Gronkowski.

It remains to be seen where Fournette will land. But the Buccaneers appear to be in the mix.
