The Denver Nuggets will be without center Mason Plumlee when they face the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday. Plumlee suffered a strained his right calf during Monday’s game versus the Boston Celtics.

The 6-foot-11 center was having a dominant game against Boston, scoring 16 points with eight rebounds and two blocks in over 28 minutes of action. The circumstances that resulted in the injury were eerily similar to the one that the New Orleans Pelicans’ DeMarcus Cousins suffered late last week.

With 7:47 left in the fourth quarter, the Celtics ahead 92-91, Plumlee was at the free-throw line for a chance to tie the game. Plumlee missed the shot and raced to grab the rebound but may have planted his foot awkwardly. He was walking gingerly soon after but no timeout was called after the ball went out of bounds.

The Celtics took advantage of the Nuggets’ limping center as they scored on a layup. Plumlee had to be helped to get back to the locker room afterward.

The Denver Post’s Gina Mizell had an update on Plumlee’s status.

“Mason Plumlee (calf strain) has crutches in the locker room. He’s not going to San Antonio—will stay back to get an MRI.”

The Nuggets will be heading to San Antonio shorthanded with both Paul Millsap and Plumlee out of the lineup. Millsap has been out with a wrist injury since November 19 when they went up against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Nikola Jokic will have to step up his game even further if the Nuggets hope to make up for the absence of two of their best big men.
