Greta Gerwig's Barbie is the story of the “Barbenheimer” weekend, but Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer also enjoyed a stellar opening weekend. The Dark Knight director's latest broke one of his own records with its box office haul.
Oppenheimer grossed a whopping $80.5 million domestically during its opening weekend and another $93,657,000 million internationally for a debut of $174,157,000.
While Oppenheimer's debut didn't make as much as two of Nolan's Batman films, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, the film is the highest opening for a non-IP film. Inception ($62.7 million) and Dunkirk ($50.5 million) are the runner-ups.
“Barbenheimer” was a viral meme, yes, but it's still significant and promising to see two films that got hype that weren't superhero films. Movie theaters were likely thrilled (if not slightly overwhelmed) by the demand these two films brought to their locations. Barbie grossed a whopping $337 million worldwide this past weekend, and when you combine that with Oppenheimer's haul, it results in one of the biggest box office openings ever.

The large ensemble features the likes of Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie, Jason Clarke, Dane DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich, Jack Quaid, and Josh Peck, among a long list of more actors.
