Earlier on Wednesday, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur did not commit to Mike Pettine as his defensive coordinator, saying the team still needed to figure some things out. Well, apparently, they did.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, the Packers will be bringing back Pettine for a third season. Demovsky notes that Pettine met with LaFleur after LaFleur's press conference on Wednesday.

People were raving about Green Bay's improved defense earlier this season, but the Packers' 37-20 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game this past weekend had many singing a different tune.

49ers running back Raheem Mostert gashed Green Bay for 220 yards and four touchdowns in San Francisco's victory, which was not the first time the Packers' 23rd-ranked run defense had gotten torched this year.

Green Bay's defense was also a mixed bag during the regular season, finishing ninth in the NFL in scoring defense but 18th in yards allowed, an indication the Packers were bending but not breaking for most of the year.

Obviously, that strategy did not work too well against the Niners.

Still, there is no doubt Green Bay's defense was better in 2019 than it had been in previous years, which probably had more to do with the additions of linebackers Za'Darius Smith and Preston Smith and safety Adrian Amos more than anything Pettine did, but it's understandable why LaFleur would want to bring Pettine back.

The Packers won 13 games and captured the NFC North division title this season, locking up a first-round bye in the process.
