Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was forthright regarding the team's quarterback situation going forward. Gutekunst said Monday the team is committed to Aaron Rodgers, saying “Aaron's our guy” while adding Rodgers will be quarterbacking the Packers “for the foreseeable future.”
Actions speak louder than words, though, and Gutekunst's actions have hardly quelled doubts about Rodgers' future in Green Bay.
The Packers pulled one of the stunners of the 2020 NFL draft when they used their first-round pick on Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. All pre-draft indications were Green Bay would look to get Rodgers help at wide receiver, yet the front office in essence landed on an eventual successor.
But the choice seemed to motivate Rodgers. He responded with arguably the best individual season of his career en route to league MVP honors.
Rodgers made waves when he alluded to some uncertainty following the team's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game. Still, Packers president Mark Murphy assuaged fears shortly thereafter. Or so it seemed.
Rodgers and the Packers have yet to reach an agreement on an extension. There has been little to suggest Green Bay even has real interest in signing Rodgers to an extension.
Maybe Gutekunst's statement hints at things yet to come. The Packers GM also said Monday the team was “working through things” with respect to a Rodgers extension, per ESPN's Rob Demovsky.
There is still a ways to go before Packers fans can feel fully confident in Rodgers' status as the guy under center.
However, this at least seems like a step in the right direction.
