Cannes Film Festival Palme D’Or winner Anora has announced its limited theatrical release for Oct. 18.

The film’s production studio, NEON usually launches its award-winning movies in October such as 2019’s Parasite, which won an Academy Award for Best Picture, 2021’s Titane, 2022’s Triangle of Sadness and last year’s Oscar winner Anatomy of a Fall.

Of the five movies, it was Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite that had the best domestic box office returns with $53.3 million dollars before the pandemic. It was fourth-highest grossing foreign-language film (as well as foreign produced) in the US after 2000’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 1997’s Life is Beautiful and Zhang Yimou’s 2002 movie Hero.

Anora, written and directed by Sean Baker, follows the story of a young Uzbek-American high-class stripper from Brighton Beach Ani, played by Mikey Madison. As she’s conversant in Russian, she falls in love and marries a Russian oligarch’s son, Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn). Their relationship is threatened when his family parents travel to New York in order to force an annulment.

The film currently has a 98% Tomatometer and 89 Metacritic score, which makes it universally acclaimed. Yura Borisov also stars. The film has been compared to the 1990 Julia Roberts romance comedy Pretty Woman.

Anatomy of a Fall grossed at $5 million, with Triangle of Sadness at $4.6 million and Titane at $1.4 million. Baker’s highest grossing film in the US to date is the 2017 movie The Florida Project at $5.9 million. With the Cannes win buzz, Anora should fare better at the box office.

The filmmaker’s previous film credits include the 2021’s Red Rocket, 2015’s Tangerine and 2012’s Starlet.

Before Anora, Madison was previously seen in the Primetime Emmy-nominated series Better Things as Max. The show ran for five seasons from 2016 to 2022. Her film acting credits include Quentin Tarantino 2019 movie Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and 2022’s Scream.

The actress will next be seen in the Apple TV+ series adaptation of Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel Lady in the Lake. The show will also star Oscar winner Natalie Portman and the new Superman David Corenswet. The series will premiere July 19.
