The Texas Rangers are in what you could call a World Series slump, sitting at 30-32 on the season after winning the Fall Classic last year. They're dealing with numerous injuries to pitchers, including Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. On top of that, shortstop Corey Seager just got hurt, too.

Seager tweaked his hamstring on Wednesday in a victory over the Detroit Tigers but thankfully, he won't miss too much time. Via Evan Grant:

“Seager will miss a couple more days. Rangers will call up Davis Wendzel, DFA Derek Hill.”

As for Scherzer, he's nearly ready to make another rehab start, which could come as soon as Sunday, per Grant. The righty threw another pen on Friday and felt great after.

Scherzer of course suffered an injury in the postseason in 2023 and had back surgery in December. He first took the mound in the minors in April but right thumb soreness and a triceps issue resulted in the Rangers shutting him down for a little bit longer.

Rangers' pitching staff has struggled to stay healthy

Health has not been on the side of the Texas staff. Aside from Scherzer, deGrom and Tyler Mahle are recovering from Tommy John and probably won't pitch until after the All-Star break. Nathan Eovaldi and Dane Dunning have missed time as well, while Cody Bradford is now on the 60-day IL.

Scherzer was solid after coming over from the New York Mets at the trade deadline last year, going 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA in eight starts. He appeared twice in the ALCS and once in the World Series before exiting early due to injury. The 39-year-old is in the final year of his $43.3 million deal, in which the Mets are paying around $30 million of it.

Corey Seager having a nice campaign

It's no secret that Seager is one of the best shortstops in the sport on both sides of the ball. Although the Rangers haven't been that consistent offensively, his numbers are solid. The 30-year-old is slashing .271 with 13 home runs, five doubles, and 30 RBIs. He also has a .360 OBP and .832 OPS.

Seager came up grabbing his hamstring after smacking an RBI single on Wednesday. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy doesn't seem to believe it will be a serious injury, though.

Via AP Sports:

“He did some light jogging, but not quite ready,” Bochy said Friday. “It looks like it’s going to be a couple of days, three days.”

“We think he’ll be ready before the 10 days are up,” Bochy said.

Seager is arguably Texas' best hitter in 24′ and a tone-setter at the top of the lineup. The Rangers are in the midst of a three-game weekend series with the San Francisco Giants at Globe Life Field before hitting the road to visit the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Texas is 6-4 in their last 10 contests and five games behind the Seattle Mariners for first place in the American League West. Not all is lost yet for the defending champions, but health is undoubtedly the number one priority. Hopefully, Seager and Scherzer will be back in the fold sooner rather than later.
